The Independent Psychoanalytic Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Association (IPCAPA) is one of the 4 professional and training associations within The British Psychotherapy Foundation (bpf). Within the bpf, IPCAPA is the single association that focuses on the field of psychotherapy with children and their families.
There are over 120 qualified and student members in IPCAPA, their number having grown from an original fifteen members when the child psychotherapy training was first established at BAP by Anne Hurry and colleagues in 1982. There are a range of post-graduate courses and events for our graduate members.
Our name, IPCAPA, developed out of a debate and lively discussion within the former BAP Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy section, emphasises our independent theoretical tradition of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. We are the only training school, nationally, to deliver a child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapy training in the independent tradition of psychoanalytic psychotherapy and we are proud that the new name, IPCAPA, holds this firmly.
IPCAPA aims to be an association which will both continue to deliver the child psychotherapy training in the Independent tradition (inclusive of the Jungian pathway), and harness and foster the energy and interests of the qualified membership into a lively post graduate life.
IPCAPA currently delivers a professional doctoral level training in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (accredited by the Association of Child Psychotherapists), as well as a pre clinical course - Developing a Psychoanalytic Approach to Working with Children and Adolescents whilst a significant number of members teach on the bpf /Birkbeck MSc in the Psychodynamics of Human Development.
Our specialist skills are in work with children, adolescents, infants, parents, and families. The training requires at least four years of intensive, weekly supervised, psychoanalytic psychotherapy and a range of other clinical experience before qualification.
Our training is commissioned and quality controlled by Health Education North Central East London behalf of the three London Local Education and Training Boards (our major commissioners) and this year we were pleased to receive a very positive annual report on our Quality and Contract Performance Management for 2013-14.

History of the training
Our training has been running for over 30 years. It opened in 1982 with 4 trainees and has grown to 35 trainees across London and Home Counties. 100 trainees have trained at the bpf since our humble beginnings (many now in Consultant/ Head of Service posts in NHS). In 2012/13, we have had a number of anniversary events recently such as the Winnicott’s Childrens Book Launch (pdf) and our 30th Anniversary Celebration, which have been wonderful events that celebrated our tradition, history and future.
We conclude our successful academic year with a joyful and celebratory Graduation Event (pdf). In 2014 we honoured Anne Hurry, as one of our founding members and in 2015, we remembered Pat Radford, who was a committed supporter and friend of our training as well as celebrated Juliet Hopkins’ new book ‘An Independent Mind’ (pdf).
Our next graduation event is planned for 16th July 2017.
opening up of our afternoon programme
The focus of the afternoon programme is to explore the broad range of work of child psychotherapy in CAMHS teams. It is also to learn about new developments in our field of expertise and among other professionals working with children in the CAMHS multi-disciplinary team.
In 2011/12 there had been such positive support by the service supervisors of our trainees on the content of the afternoon programme that we opened selective parts of the afternoon programme the following year to qualified child psychotherapists (having consulted both service supervisors and trainees in 2011/12), in order to learn alongside the trainees.
These sessions provide on-going CPD for those experienced child psychotherapists who teach and supervise trainees, as well as providing stimulating discussion for the trainees with those more experienced in their field, both within the teaching session and within the placement.
The added benefit to this innovative approach to CPD for qualified clinicians is the enhanced learning for the trainees, who are exposed to a wider variety of opinion and experience
The level and complexity of the service supervisor role has become more demanding over the last few years and we are mindful of supporting and enabling these clinicians, who are the main source of learning of our trainees within their placement, to feel confident and exposed to continued personal development and reflection. As well as innovating a Service Supervisor’s Programme (link to CPD 35) we thought that experiencing the workshop programme first hand and be able to critically evaluate its content and delivery more comprehensively.
We are now in our second year of opening up our afternoon programme to our IPCAPA clinicians and at the start of this academic year we invited our service supervisors and wider staff to join us for some of the interesting presentations on a Tuesday afternoon. We are encouraged by the positive response we have had from both our trainees and service supervisors on this innovative approach to learning collaboratively.
