minding the gaps: culture, race and language in the consulting room

In this paper, Kannan Navaratnem will examine the ‘Gaps in/between the identities of patient and analyst’, ‘Gaps in communication and continuity’ and ‘Gaps created by the immigrant analyst and/or the immigrant patient’. He will also explore if these gaps could be seen as crevices into which specific issues of unconscious fantasies, as well as transference and countertransference currents lodge themselves and gain a unique emotional valency, generating new psychic material and enriching the analytic encounter and relationship. Drawing on his clinical experience, he will consider how these gaps are formed in the areas of culture, race, and language in the consulting room.

Tickets are also available on the door at £20.

This event is organised by the bpf Wessex.
