exploring gender diversity

This event is now SOLD OUT.

Our developing understanding of gender development and expression reveals that they are far more complex than we have hitherto tended to assume. This day conference is for people working in the therapy profession who are interested in exploring this complexity, with speakers who have long experience of work in this field both with young people and with adults. The conference will aim to provide space and scope for people from the psychotherapy and psychoanalytic community thoughtfully to examine their own attitudes to issues of gender and their professional role in providing an appropriate response to the clinical needs of patients.

The morning session will look at gender diversity in relation to children and adolescents as experienced over many years at the Tavistock and Portman’s Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) with presentations by Dr. Bernadette Wren and Dr. Domenico Di Ceglie, who founded the service. Their talks will describe the nature of the service provided by GIDS and the particular considerations that arise from work with young people and their families including the challenges that create particular anxieties for psychotherapists.

In the afternoon Dr. Igy Moon and Pamela Gawler-Wright will focus of gender diversity in relation to adults. Drawing from their extensive clinical experience in people with body dysmorphia and uncertainties about gender, they will discuss the issues that face adult gender diverse people and the way that psychotherapy can support them. They will explore the realities of the gender diverse community, the impact of the Gender Recognition Act, and the Memorandum of Understanding against Conversion therapy for LGBT people.

The event will be chaired by members of the British Psychotherapy Foundation.

As the Conference will address clinical issues that should be kept within a professional psychoanalytic frame please fill the application form here.
