help me love my baby

In this talk, Ju Tomaz-Merrills will present the film Help me Love my Baby, a documentary about a mother and baby, filmed at the Anna Freud Centre for Channel 4. The documentary looks in detail at the problematic relationship of a new born baby and her mother, and how the mother can be helped to unpack what is triggered in her by the birth of this baby. It also provides us with a platform to discuss what happens when the mother/parent is not able to do this work in her or himself and what is the impact on the baby and, later on, the toddler, child, adolescent and adult.

Chair: Lou Corner

The talk starts at 11. Registration with coffee/tea and biscuits is at 10.30am.

Tickets are also available on the door at £20.

about the speaker

Ju Tomaz-Merrills is a psychoanalyst and psychoanalytic psychotherapist. She has worked in the public and private sectors.

She worked at the Anna Freud Centre in the PIP team as a parent-infant psychotherapist and was a pioneer in the delivery of the New Beginnings programme for mothers and babies in prison. She contributed to the team’s publication of their work in Relational Trauma in Infancy edited by Tessa Baradon and published by Routledge in 2009.

Ju's clinical interests range from working with mothers and babies to intensive psychoanalytic work with adults. She has a particular interest in intergenerational transmission of trauma, the impact of trauma on the developing infant's mind, and how the legacy of traumatic experiences is often unconsciously handed down through the generations.

She currently teaches at the Tavistock & Portman Clinic and has a private practice in London.
