on waves of time, psyche & soma

A half-day conference featuring two outstanding and richly illustrated presentations from the IV IAAP European Congress of Analytical Psychology, Avignon 2018, on the theme of: Building the Familiar and the Unfamiliar in the Europe of Today: Cultural, Clinical & Theoretical Perspectives.

In her talk "Images from outsider artists: windows into infra-verbal somato-psychic states", Dr. Brigit Soubrouillard examines individual and collective expressions of archaic feelings in the field of "raw art”. She will begin by discussing one simple man’s journey who gave concrete shape and spectacular expression of his inner soul, and how and why this raw art, presented throughout the talk, touches us. She will then illustrate, through various situations and clinical cases, how this unconventional art provides a direct access to archaic zones of the artists’ unconscious. In particular, certain pieces of outsiders art are very apt to symbolize  ‘infra-verbal somato-psychic' states which are so difficult to describe in words.

In her visually-rich talk "Facing the Waves" Chiara Tozzi discusses themes relating to waves of overwhelming societal feeling, from Carl Jung’s early experiences relating to waves through World War II and the rise of Nazism to current issues of migration, racism and the break up of the EU. Chiara uses sequences from famous films to give a symbolic representation of the issues covered in her lecture. The presentation allows space for thinking analytically and politically about wider problems that illustrate our struggle with the familiar and unfamiliar.

This event will be especially of interest to Jungian analysts and those with interest in film and visual arts. It counts as 3.5 CPD hours.
