the nitty gritty of practice: time and money in psychoanalytic psychotherapy (a clinical workshop)

Registration starts at 9:45.

This workshop aims to promote discussion and understanding of how we manage time and money: two key elements of the psychotherapy setting. These are both areas that present considerable challenges to us all and about which we can at times feel uneasy or isolated. We hope to create a space in which we can share experiences and views so as to enhance understanding and develop ideas of good practice.

The day is divided into two halves:

part 1

In the morning Sue Kegerreis will give a presentation of her work on the meaning of difficulties in time-keeping in psychotherapy.

Moving on from this we will open up a discussion about how we manage these issues in practice. We probably all differ in terms of how we take up lateness as an enactment and in relation to how we deal with requests for alternative times if patients are ill etc. We can share our experiences and views on questions such as: how strict are we about the ending of sessions? Do we let patients run over sometimes and how do we think about this? What do we do if we are ourselves late? Have we ever finished a session early or overrun by mistake? What have we done in response?

part 2

(after lunch break between 13:00 and 14:00)

In the afternoon Barry Keane will give a presentation based on his research into the emotional issues and difficulties faced by psychoanalytic psychotherapists around the clinical fee.

Moving on from this we will open up a discussion about how we manage these issues in practice. We can share our experiences and views on questions such as: how much do we take up issues of the fee with our patients? What do we ourselves find difficult or avoid in relation to the fee? Why? How do we manage charging for missed sessions? How much do we charge? How is this decided? What governs our ‘sliding scale’ if we have one? Do we feel our fee is appropriate and fair? How do we negotiate the fee and manage raising fees? How do we manage the mechanics of the account and the fee? What is changed if we use electronic payment systems? How do we respond if patients cannot/do not pay us on time?
