inner voices and other lives as secrets: a psychoanalytic perspective on fragmentation and compartmentalisation

Psychoanalysis has a special interest in the study of breakdown and fragmentation of the ego, especially during extreme states of mind such as psychosis. It contributes to our understanding of how conscious and unconscious fragmentation and compartmentalisation of mind and behaviour can act as defences against psychic collapse.

In this talk, Kannan Navaratnem will present an overview of human secrets in this context and focus, through a psychoanalytic lens, on the type of secrets of which individuals are consciously aware but unable to process and think about, and therefore resort to the defences of fragmentation or compartmentalisation: inner voices only they hear and other lives of which only they are aware. To illustrate some of these points in relation to analytic work with secrets as well as secrets in analysis, he will refer briefly to some material from the analysis of a woman with severe disturbances to her ego functions and identity. He will also include two film clips from contemporary cinema to highlight the depiction of these two types of secrets.

Registration, tea and coffee start at 10.30 am. Tickets are also available at the door at £20.

This event is organised by the bpf  Wessex.
