how do I love my baby when hate is all I feel?

This event draws upon a documentary film about a mother and baby, filmed at the Anna Freud Centre for Channel 4. The documentary looks in detail at the problematic relationship of a newborn and her mother, and the way in which the mother is helped to unpack what was triggered in her by the birth of her baby.

Clips from this film will form the basis for our discussion, which will focus on what happens when a parent is not able to find love for their baby within them. We will look at the impact that this may have on both the child (as a baby, toddler, child, adolescent and adult) as well as the parent themselves.

This event is organised by the bpf  Wessex.

about the speaker

Ju Tomaz-Merrills is a psychoanalyst and member of the British Psychoanalytic Association. She has worked in the public and private sector, including at the Anna Freud Centre, as a parent-infant psychotherapist. She was a pioneer in the delivery of the New Beginnings Programme for mothers and babies in prison and contributed to the team’s publication of their work in Relational Trauma in Infancy, edited by Tessa Baradon (Routledge 2009).

Ju's clinical interests range from working with mothers and babies to intensive psychoanalytic work with adults. She has a particular interest in the intergenerational transmission of trauma, the impact of trauma on the developing infant's mind, and how the legacy of traumatic experiences is often unconsciously handed down through the generations. She teaches at the Tavistock & Portman Clinic and has a private practice in London.
