seminar - the sound of silence: analytic receptivity and the space of the session - payment

A bpf Wessex Event - Presented by Lesley Caldwell

This paper opens up a discussion on the silent patient and what may be enabled and what prevented by a consistent resort to silence over an extended period. I am particularly interested in silence itself but also in how it illuminates the variety of forms of analytic communication manifest in any treatment. In placing silence alongside other communicative modalities the paper questions the utility of terms like negative therapeutic reaction (NTR) and the negative transference as explanatory tools for analyses of this kind. Two clinical cases will be referred to.

Lesley Caldwell is a member of the BPA in private practice. She is Honorary Professor in the Psychoanalysis Unit at UCL, a member of the training analyst’s committee for IPCAPA (the independent child and adolescent training), and a European representative for COWAP, the International Psychoanalytic Association committee for women in psychoanalysis. With Helen Taylor Robinson she is General Editor of the Collected Works of Donald Winnicott (2016, OUP) . She is currently researching a book on analytic and artistic communication.
