bpf annual lecture: R.D. Hinshelwood 'new experiences in psychoanalytic treatment’
Lecture in memory of Lionel Monteith. Tea/Coffee & Registration from 10.30am
Psychoanalysis has shown for over a century that we are the product of our own developmental history. We cannot change history, and we tend to live our lives according to familiar experiences and expectations. A less dominant theme in the literature has been to understand how new experiences can take us outside the repeating of the old.
In this Annual Lecture, Bob Hinshelwood will be discussing what sort of a new experience we have when we enter a psychoanalytic treatment.

about the Lionel Monteith Memorial Lecture
The Lionel Monteith Memorial Lecture is an annual event to commemorate the life and work of Lionel Monteith, the founder of the Lincoln Clinic and Centre for Psychotherapy in 1967. It was an organisation for the promotion of psychoanalytic psychotherapy and the training of psychotherapists. As a beneficiary of psychotherapeutic treatment himself, Lionel wanted to make therapy available for more people at an affordable fee. Lionel was a warm, sensitive and kind person, with a fatherly approach to leadership, and after the creation of the bpf in 2013, the Lionel Monteith Lecture continues as a tribute to how much both colleagues and patients received from him.
