Description
Join us for an online open evening to find out more about the British Psychotherapy Foundation’s Infant Observation course.
This event is for anyone interested in undertaking an Infant Observation, to understand more about the first two years of human development.
Application to the course is open to members of the public curious to explore how a baby develops in the context of their primary relationships. It is also suitable for those already working in professions such as teaching or the caring professions, as well as for those hoping to train or already working as a psychotherapist or counsellor.*
The course is relevant to people working with adults as well as those working with children.
We will introduce the experience of Infant Observation through video material and excerpts from observational material, to give the feel of what it is like to undertake an Infant Observation.
The evening will offer an opportunity to learn more about the structure of the course, entry requirements and the application process. There will also be time to ask questions.
About the speakers
Janine Sternberg and Pamela Bartram are co-directors of the bpf Infant Observation Course.
They are experienced child and adolescent psychotherapists who undertook further training some years ago to become adult psychoanalytic psychotherapists. They worked for many years in the NHS and now work primarily in private practice. They share an interest in infant observation and recognise its central role in enhancing the personal and professional skills and capacities needed for clinical practice. They recognise too, the opportunity it offers the observer to understand more about development and relationships.
Janine has written a book 'Infant Observation at the Heart of Training' addressing these areas. She was previously Clinical Course Director of the IPCAPA course (doctorate in child & adolescent psychotherapy delivered by bpf and Anna Freud Centre, accredited by UCL).
Pamela began work as a music therapist and retains a special interest in the non-verbal aspects of communication in the consulting room. She has extensive experience of working with families who have a child with a disability and teaches and writes about this area of work.
*If you are a psychotherapist or counsellor residing in an active conflict zone, you are eligible to attend this event free of charge (regardless of whether you are a bpf member or not). Please email events@bpf-psychotherapy to enquire about a ticket.
