Into the Depths
Free online course with FutureLearn
Explore love, family, dreams, trauma and death with seven bpf psychotherapists from the psychoanalytic and Jungian traditions.
Into the Depths is a free six-week introduction to psychoanalytic and Jungian ideas about the mind, designed by the British Psychotherapy Foundation for FutureLearn. Through short videos with practising bpf psychoanalytic psychotherapists and Jungian analysts, you’ll explore how the unconscious shapes our lives. The course covers family and early relationships, dreams, love and desire, trauma, and death and loss, introducing ideas such as repression, the shadow, projection and the Oedipus complex.
The course is open to anyone curious about the inner life, whether you’re simply interested, considering a career in therapy or already working in a related field. No previous knowledge is needed. Readings, myths and fairy tales bring the ideas to life, while quizzes, discussions and private journal activities help you reflect on what you’ve learned at your own pace.

Course Content & Structure
The course runs over six weeks, with about three hours of study each week. Each week combines short videos with practising psychotherapists and Jungian analysts, readings, quizzes, discussions and private journal activities, and ends by adding new terms to your personal glossary.
Week 1: Introduction to psychoanalytic and Jungian perspectives on the mind
Meet your teachers and fellow learners, and explore the foundations: the unconscious, Freud’s image of the rider and the horse, the shadow, and how psychoanalytic therapy works in practice.
Week 2: Family: how the psyche is formed
Discover how our earliest relationships shape who we become, through ideas such as object relations, projective identification and Winnicott’s transitional objects, alongside a documentary on the bond between parent and baby.
Week 3: Dreams
Compare Freud’s and Jung’s theories of dreams, read a fairy tale as if it were a dream, and try interpreting a dream of your own.
Week 4: Love, desire and sexuality
Explore Freud’s ideas on sexuality and gender, the Oedipus complex, projection, the patterns we repeat in relationships, and a critical look at Jung’s archetypes.
Week 5: Trauma
Learn how psychoanalytic and Jungian thinkers understand trauma, how the mind protects itself, and how healing can happen, through the myth of Chiron, the “wounded healer”.
Week 6: Death, loss, mourning and transformation
Explore grief and endings, Freud’s distinction between mourning and melancholia, myths of loss, and Jung’s alchemical image of transformation. The week closes with a look back over the whole course.
Meet the Teachers
You will learn from seven experienced psychoanalytic and Jungian clinicians from the bpf, who share their thinking and clinical experience through a series of filmed conversations.

Dr Frances Gillies, psychoanalytic psychotherapist, clinical psychologist and Chief Executive Officer of the bpf, explains how therapy works, object relations, and how the mind copes with trauma.

Dr Poul Rohleder, psychoanalytic psychotherapist, introduces the unconscious mind and explores sexuality, gender and the Oedipus complex.

Alice Cowley, psychoanalytic psychotherapist and bpf senior member, explores family relationships, dreams, trauma and how we learn to live with loss.

Jane Johnson, Jungian analyst and bpf fellow, brings a Jungian perspective to the family, dreams, complexes and archetypes.

Marilyn A. F. Mathew, Jungian analyst, bpf fellow and IAAP member, introduces the shadow, dream work, the wounded healer and the alchemical image of transformation.

Peter Rigg, psychodynamic psychotherapist and bpf professional senior member, explores early development, repression, and Freud’s ideas on mourning and loss.

Helen Sett-Wong, psychoanalytic psychotherapist and couple psychoanalytic psychotherapist, explores the Oedipus complex, projection, the patterns we repeat, and how relationships end.
