Reading Freud
Online Reading Group
The British Psychotherapy Foundation offers a sustained programme of study devoted to Freud’s writings, organised as a three-year cycle. The programme is designed to follow the development of Freud’s work from its early formulations through to his later writings, with each year focusing on a distinct phase and set of themes.
The group meets online on weekday evenings. There are 8 sessions in each term.
The course forms part of a three-year cycle devoted to Freud’s work across its full development.
- Year 1 (commencing January 2027) focuses on Freud’s early writings
- Year 2 (commencing January 2028) focuses on Freud’s middle-period writings
- Year 3 (commencing January 2029) focuses on Freud’s later writings
Across the three years, the programme offers a structured opportunity to read Freud’s work in depth, with attention to the development of his ideas over time.
Each year stands independently and may be taken separately.
The reading group meets three times per month during the academic terms (Spring, Summer and Autumn), in the evening, and takes place online.

The standard of teaching was exceptional, and the course structure fostered an environment conducive to our growth and development as clinicians. Regular weekly supervision sessions allowed us to strengthen our peer relationships while deepening our learning.

Simply, it exceeded all my expectations, and sufficiently impressed and enthused me to consider a future career in psychotherapy. On a personal level it has changed me; something that has been accelerated by beginning my own personal analysis. I find myself thinking about non-verbal communications much more as a consequence of having attended the course.”
bpf Student
The course has allowed me to dip my toe into the analytic world and provided a broad overview of the analytic landscape. It has enhanced my understanding of psychoanalytic ideas and I’ve particularly benefited from speaking to experienced clinicians. The discussion groups in particular have been useful to clarify my own ideas and get a different perspective from others. Overall, it has helped me to determine if I would like to pursue work in this field.”
