PPA Reading Group
Online Reading Group
The PPA (Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Association) is one of the membership and training associations within the bpf, and offers an intensive clinical training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy with adults.
This online reading group will introduce you to important psychoanalytic thinkers and concepts. The group will examine various psychoanalytic perspectives on modern life, including social, political, and environmental issues. Additionally, it will provide an opportunity to discuss how these issues might manifest in clinical practice.
The PPA Reading Group will have a thematic focus each term and the content is delivered at postgraduate level.
Applications are open for Spring 2026
The group will meet online on Thursdays evenings for 8 weeks during each term.
Application deadlines 2026:
- Spring Term 1 December 2025
- Summer Term 2 March 2026
- Autumn Term 6 July 2026

The reading group is open to those with an interest in developing their knowledge of psychoanalytic theory.
The group is open to applicants with no prior knowledge of psychoanalytic texts, however an interest and some familiarity with the broader field of applied psychoanalysis and/or psychotherapy is considered as particularly relevant. The content is taught at a postgraduate level.
Each term, the reading group is centered around a specific psychoanalytic theme, such as: Narcissism, the Oedipus Complex, Drive Theory etc. The readings will examine various psychoanalytic perspectives on modern life, including social, political, and environmental issues. We will also consider how these issues might manifest in clinical practice.
This course can be taken as general CPD, or as preparation for a subsequent application for clinical training.
For those wishing to apply to our Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training (PPA), this would be a good place to build from and attendance would contribute positively towards an application.

The standard of teaching was exceptional, and the course structure fostered an environment conducive to our growth and development as clinicians. Regular weekly supervision sessions allowed us to strengthen our peer relationships while deepening our learning.

Simply, it exceeded all my expectations, and sufficiently impressed and enthused me to consider a future career in psychotherapy. On a personal level it has changed me; something that has been accelerated by beginning my own personal analysis. I find myself thinking about non-verbal communications much more as a consequence of having attended the course.”
bpf Student
The course has allowed me to dip my toe into the analytic world and provided a broad overview of the analytic landscape. It has enhanced my understanding of psychoanalytic ideas and I’ve particularly benefited from speaking to experienced clinicians. The discussion groups in particular have been useful to clarify my own ideas and get a different perspective from others. Overall, it has helped me to determine if I would like to pursue work in this field.”
